Cape Verde Entry Requirements
Visa, immigration, and customs information
Visa Requirements
Entry permissions vary by nationality. Find your category below.
Cape Verde requires most travelers to obtain pre-arrival registration (EASE), though some nationalities enjoy visa-free entry. The system is primarily electronic, allowing travelers to complete registration online before departure.
Citizens of ECOWAS member states can enter Cape Verde without a visa
ECOWAS nationals must still present valid travel documents and may need to show proof of accommodation and return tickets. All other nationalities require either EASE registration or a traditional visa.
Most international travelers must complete online pre-registration before arrival
Cost: Approximately €31 (around $34 USD) for tourist registration, payable online via credit/debit card
Upon approval, travelers receive a confirmation email with a registration code. Print this confirmation and present it at immigration along with your passport. The EASE registration is single-entry and valid for stays up to 30 days.
Travelers who did not complete EASE registration can register upon arrival
Cost is higher than pre-registration (approximately €34-40). May result in longer processing times and queues. Pre-registration through EASE is strongly recommended to avoid delays and additional costs.
Certain nationalities or travel purposes require embassy-issued visas
Required for employment, residency, or if traveling from countries with specific restrictions. Business travelers on short trips can typically use EASE registration. Contact the nearest Cape Verdean diplomatic mission for specific requirements.
Arrival Process
Upon arrival at Cape Verde's international airports, travelers proceed through a standard immigration and customs process. The main entry points are Amílcar Cabral International Airport (Sal), Aristides Pereira International Airport (Boa Vista), and Nelson Mandela International Airport (Praia). Being prepared with proper documentation ensures a smooth entry experience.

Tips for Smooth Entry
Customs & Duty-Free
Cape Verde customs regulations are designed to prevent smuggling while allowing reasonable personal items for travelers. All arriving passengers must pass through customs control, and certain items require declaration. Understanding duty-free allowances and prohibited items helps avoid delays and potential penalties.
Prohibited Items
- Illegal drugs and narcotics - strictly prohibited with severe penalties including imprisonment
- Firearms and ammunition - without proper permits and authorization from Cape Verdean authorities
- Counterfeit goods - including fake designer items, pirated media, and counterfeit currency
- Endangered species products - items made from protected animals or plants (ivory, certain shells, exotic skins)
- Pornographic materials - particularly those involving minors
- Hazardous materials - explosives, flammable substances, toxic chemicals without authorization
- Fresh meat and dairy products - from countries with disease outbreaks
- Certain plants and seeds - without phytosanitary certificates
Restricted Items
- Medications - Prescription medications should be in original packaging with prescription or doctor's letter. Quantities should be reasonable for personal use during stay. Certain controlled substances may require special permits.
- Professional equipment - Cameras, drones, and professional video equipment may require declaration and temporary import permits. Drones require special authorization from aviation authorities.
- Live animals and pets - Require import permits, health certificates, and vaccination records. See special situations section for pet travel details.
- Archaeological artifacts - Exporting items of cultural or historical significance is strictly controlled and generally prohibited
- Marine products - Collection of corals, shells, and sea turtles is restricted. Check regulations before collecting beach items.
- Radio transmitters - CB radios, satellite phones, and other communication devices may require permits
Health Requirements
Cape Verde has specific health entry requirements designed to protect public health. While routine vaccinations are recommended, only yellow fever vaccination is mandatory for certain travelers. It's essential to check current health requirements before travel as these can change based on global health situations.
Required Vaccinations
- Yellow Fever - Required for travelers aged 9 months and older arriving from countries with risk of yellow fever transmission, or who have transited for more than 12 hours through an airport of a country with risk of yellow fever transmission. Vaccination certificate must be presented at immigration. Valid 10 days after vaccination and for life of the vaccinated person.
Recommended Vaccinations
- Hepatitis A - Recommended for all travelers due to potential food and water contamination
- Hepatitis B - Recommended for travelers who may have contact with blood or body fluids, or require medical treatment
- Typhoid - Recommended for travelers eating outside major restaurants and hotels
- Routine vaccinations - Ensure up-to-date with measles-mumps-rubella (MMR), diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis, varicella (chickenpox), polio, and yearly flu shot
- Rabies - For travelers with extensive outdoor activities or working with animals
- COVID-19 - Follow current vaccination recommendations and requirements
Health Insurance
Travel health insurance is strongly recommended for all visitors to Cape Verde. While not mandatory for entry, medical facilities are limited, especially on smaller islands, and medical evacuation can be extremely expensive. Ensure your policy covers medical treatment, hospitalization, and emergency medical evacuation. Some countries' national health systems do not cover treatment abroad, making private insurance essential.
Protect Your Trip with Travel Insurance
Comprehensive coverage for medical emergencies, trip cancellation, lost luggage, and 24/7 emergency assistance. Many countries recommend or require travel insurance.

Special Situations
Additional requirements for specific circumstances.
Children must have their own passport (family passports are not accepted). Minors under 18 traveling alone or with only one parent should carry a notarized letter of consent from the non-accompanying parent(s) or legal guardian, particularly if parents are separated or divorced. The letter should include contact information, travel dates, and authorization for the trip. Birth certificates may be requested to prove relationship. Children are subject to the same EASE registration or visa requirements as adults. Parents should carry copies of children's birth certificates and, if applicable, custody documents or death certificates of deceased parents.
Pets entering Cape Verde must have an import permit obtained in advance from the Veterinary Services (Direcção dos Serviços de Pecuária). Required documentation includes: valid rabies vaccination certificate (administered at least 30 days before travel but within validity period, usually 1 year), international health certificate issued by a licensed veterinarian within 10 days of travel, microchip identification meeting ISO standards, and treatment for parasites. Dogs and cats must be at least 3 months old. Some breeds may be restricted. Pets must enter through specific airports (check current regulations). Upon arrival, pets undergo veterinary inspection. A quarantine period may be required depending on origin country. Contact Cape Verdean embassy or veterinary services well in advance (at least 2-3 months) as permit processing takes time. Airlines have specific requirements for pet travel in cabin or cargo.
Tourist registrations and visas are typically valid for 30 days. To extend your stay, apply at the nearest Immigration Office (Direcção Geral dos Serviços de Estrangeiros e Fronteiras) before your authorized stay expires. Extensions are granted at the discretion of immigration authorities and typically allow an additional 30 days, with total tourist stays generally not exceeding 90 days in a 180-day period. Required documents for extension include: valid passport, original entry stamp, proof of accommodation, proof of sufficient funds, return ticket (may be flexible), application form, and extension fee (approximately 2,500-5,000 CVE). For stays longer than 90 days, you may need to apply for a temporary residence permit, which requires different documentation including criminal background check, health certificate, proof of income or employment, and accommodation proof. Processing times vary. Overstaying your authorized period can result in fines, deportation, and future entry bans.
Business visitors conducting short-term business activities (meetings, conferences, negotiations) can typically use the EASE registration system under tourist category for stays up to 30 days. However, if engaging in actual work, employment, or extended business activities, a business visa or work permit is required. Business visa applications require invitation letter from Cape Verdean company or organization, company registration documents, proof of business relationship, and detailed itinerary. Work permits for employment require employer sponsorship, employment contract, professional qualifications, health certificate, criminal background check, and are processed through the Ministry of Labor. Processing time for work permits can be 2-3 months. Always clarify the nature of your business activities with Cape Verdean authorities to ensure proper documentation.
Cruise ship passengers on shore excursions typically receive temporary entry clearance for the duration of the ship's port stay (usually 8-12 hours). Passengers should carry ship identification, passport or approved photo ID, and ship's shore pass. Immigration processing is often handled collectively by the cruise line. However, if you plan to leave the organized shore excursion or stay in Cape Verde after the ship departs, you must complete full immigration entry procedures including EASE registration or appropriate visa. Notify the cruise line in advance if you plan to disembark permanently. Main cruise ports are Praia (Santiago), Mindelo (São Vicente), and Sal.
Passengers transiting through Cape Verde without leaving the international transit area generally do not need a visa or EASE registration if continuing their journey within 24 hours on the same or first connecting flight. However, if you need to collect and recheck baggage, change airports, or stay overnight, you must complete entry procedures including EASE registration. If your layover exceeds 24 hours or you wish to leave the airport to explore, full entry requirements apply. Some airlines offer transit hotels airside, which may not require entry formalities - check with your airline. Always verify transit requirements with your airline and Cape Verdean authorities, as policies can vary based on nationality and specific circumstances.
