Day Trips from Cape Verde

Sal’s classic combo: first stop at Buracona’s ‘Blue Eye’ sea cave where sunlight paints an intense turquoise pool, then cross to the extinct crater of Pedra de Lume to float in super-salty waters 30 m below sea level. Finish with a lobster lunch in the fishing village of Palmeira and a swim at Shark Bay, where harmless lemon sharks glide in knee-deep water.

From Praia, drive along dramatic coastal cliffs to Cidade Velha, the UNESCO-listed first capital with 16th-century fort and slave-market pelourinho. After a cachupa lunch, head into Serra Malagueta Natural Park for a 2-hour forested hike to 1,064 m, spotting endemic wolves and kingfishers, before descending to Tarrafal’s white-sand bay for sunset.

A 20-minute flight from Praia lands you on an island literally born of fire. Ascend 1,600 m to the crater rim of Pico do Fogo ( the archipelago’s highest peak), then descend across black-lava fields to the tiny village inside the caldera. Reward yourself with a glass of locally grown port-style wine and a lunch of lava-roasted beans baked underground.

Quad-bike south from Sal Rei across Sahara-like dunes of the Viana Desert, stopping at the ghost-ship wreck of the Santa Maria. Continue to Praia de Santa Monica, a 22-km sweep of untouched sand rated among the best cape verde beaches. Between July-October add an evening turtle-watching segment at Ervatão, one of the world’s top loggerhead nesting sites.

Fly or ferry from Mindelo to Porto Novo, then snake by shared-aluguer over 1,800 m cloud-draped Cova crater to tiny Coculi. Descend on foot through terraced banana and sugar-cane smallholdings, following irrigation levadas to the hamlet of Paul for a farm-to-table lunch of fresh yam, goat cheese and grogue rum. Return via the same jaw-dropping coastal road.

Spend the morning in Mindelo’s animated market, where women sell fragrant oregano and live chickens beside Italian espresso stalls. Tour the restored Customs House for live morna music rehearsal, then drive 10 min up 750 m Monte Verde for panoramic shots of desert meeting turquoise bay. Evening back in town for bar-hopping along Rua Lisboa, sampling cape verde food like lagosta com catupiry.
