Cape Verde Entry Requirements

Cape Verde Entry Requirements

Visa, immigration, and customs information

Important Notice Entry requirements can change at any time. Always verify current requirements with official government sources before traveling.
Information last reviewed June 2025. Always verify with official government sources before traveling.
Every visitor to Cape Verde needs a passport valid for at least six months beyond the date of entry. Immigration at Sal, Praia, and Boa Vista airports is usually swift. Officers scan your passport, check any required visa or Electronic Travel Authorization (E-TA), and may ask routine questions about accommodation and onward tickets. Prepare the documents before you fly. Internet on arrival can be unreliable. Printed copies speed things up considerably. Cape Verde introduced the Electronic Travel Authorization system in 2022 for most nationalities that previously enjoyed visa-free access. Entry rules also cover customs allowances on alcohol, tobacco, and cash, plus standard health checks including yellow-fever proof if you arrive from an endemic country. Lines are longest on Friday evening and Sunday charter arrivals. Have all papers ready to keep the wait short.

Visa Requirements

Entry permissions vary by nationality. Find your category below.

Cape Verde uses a three-tier system: visa-free entry for selected passports, mandatory Electronic Travel Authorization for most others, and traditional consular visas for a small group of countries.

Visa-Free Entry
30 days; extensions possible at local immigration offices

Passport holders whose governments have bilateral agreements with Cape Verde may enter without additional permits.

Includes
Angola Benin Burkina Faso Côte d'Ivoire Gambia Ghana Guinea-Bissau Liberia Mali Niger Nigeria Senegal Sierra Leone Togo

Entry is granted only at international airports and the Porto Grande ferry terminal in Mindelo. Overland arrivals from Senegal require a separate visa.

Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA/eVisa)
30 days single-entry or 90 days multiple-entry (select during application)

Citizens of all other countries must obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization online before departure.

Includes
United States Canada United Kingdom Australia New Zealand Japan South Korea European Union member states Switzerland Norway Brazil Russia China India
How to Apply: Apply at evisa.gov.cv or use the mobile app. Upload passport bio page and pay by card. Approval is emailed within five working days in most cases.
Cost: Roughly the price of a mid-range dinner for two

Print the approval letter. Airlines will ask for it at check-in. The ETA is also valid for cruise passengers making port calls in Cape Verde.

Visa Required
30 days single-entry, extendable locally

Travelers whose passports are not eligible for visa-free entry or ETA must attend a Cape Verdean embassy or consulate in person.

How to Apply: Contact the nearest Cape Verde embassy (Paris, Lisbon, Washington DC, Brasília, Dakar, or Luanda) to book an appointment. Provide itinerary, hotel confirmation, and proof of funds.

Processing typically takes seven to ten business days. Apply well in advance of travel.

Arrival Process

On arrival you will pass through immigration control, baggage reclaim, and customs. The entire procedure usually lasts 20-45 minutes.

1
Immigration Control
Present passport, completed arrival card (given on the plane), and printed ETA approval or visa. Officers may photograph you and ask about your plans.
2
Baggage Claim
Two conveyor belts serve each arrival. Domestic tags are color-coded. Lost luggage desks are just outside the hall.
3
Customs Channel
Choose the green channel if you have nothing to declare, or red if carrying restricted or excess goods. Random bag searches are common.

Documents to Have Ready

Passport
Must be valid for six months and have at least one blank page.
Electronic Travel Authorization (or visa)
Print-out required. Mobile screenshots are sometimes refused.
Return or onward ticket
Airlines and immigration officers may ask to see proof of departure, for one-way travelers.
Hotel booking or host address
Name and phone number of accommodation. Officers occasionally phone to confirm.

Tips for Smooth Entry

Fill out the arrival card on the plane. Pens are often missing in the arrivals hall.
