Day Trips from Cape Verde

Day Trips from Cape Verde

The best excursions and trips you can do in a day

Cape Verde's ten islands sit scattered like punctuation marks across the mid-Atlantic, each with its own accent of lava, salt and music. From the capital Praia you can be hiking a cinder-cone ridge at sunrise and dancing to live morna in a cobbled courtyard by night, all without unpacking twice. Distances are modest, no inter-island hop is longer than 55 minutes by plane, and ferries link the nearest neighbors in two to three hours, so a single base can unlock dramatically different landscapes, from Saharan dunes to misty cloud forest. Island-hopping is the whole point here. Even the shortest crossings rearrange the light, the language of the waves and the smell of what's cooking.

Day Trip Tips

Make the most of your excursions.

  • Inter-island flights sell out on Fridays. Book TACV or BestFly at least a week ahead, Fogo and Santo Antão routes.
  • Aluguers leave when full, not on schedule. Arrive at terminals before 07:00 for same-day returns.
  • Pack layers, Cape Verde weather swings from humid coast to chilly 1,500 m ridges within an hour's drive.
  • Bring cash: ATMs exist only in main towns (Praia, Mindelo, Sal Rei, Espargos) and often empty on weekends.
  • Turtle watching is strictly red-light only. Guides will lend filters, using phone flash can disorient nesting females.
  • Sunday is church-and-family day. Most shops close, so stock water and snacks the evening before.
  • Tap water is desalinated and safe in hotels. But for day hikes carry purification tablets, rural wells can be salty.
  • Haggling is mild. Agree on taxi or tour prices beforehand. But tips of 5, 10 % are quietly expected.
