Day Trips from Cape Verde
The best excursions and trips you can do in a day
Full-Day Trips
Worth dedicating a whole day to explore.
Cidade Velha & Ribeira Grande de Santiago
$15, 20 (bus + museum entries)Fifteen minutes south of downtown Praia, the cobblestones of Cidade Velha echo with 500-year-old footsteps. You'll smell woodsmoke drifting from backyard grills, hear the Atlantic slap against the black-rock shore, and see the corroding pastel fort that once fed slaves into the New World.
Fogo Volcano Summit
$160 (flight + guide + lunch)A 35-minute flight drops you onto an island that is one huge volcano. From São Filipe, 4×4 trucks grind up black lava to 1,700 m, then you hike the final hour to the 2,829 m crater rim. Sunlight glints off glassy obsidian and the air smells faintly of sulfur and vineyard soil.
Buracona & Espargos Salt Pans, Sal
$35 (shared truck + guide + entry)From Santa Maria's hotel strip you head north past rust-coloured dunes to a lava shoreline where waves cannonade into a natural sea cave. Mid-day sun turns the pool an impossible cobalt locals call the "Blue Eye."
Santo Antão North Rim Drive
$30 return ride + $5 lunch grogFrom Porto Novo a sinuous road corkscrews from sea level to 1,400 m in 16 km, revealing terraces of sugar-cane that smell almost maple-sweet when they burn the leaves. Clouds snag on knife-edge ridges and you'll hear cowbells clanking far below.
Boa Vista Desert & Turtle Nesting Beach
$45 (jeep + guide)East of Sal Rei, the terrain turns pure Saharan: ocher dunes humming in the wind, with shipwreck ribs poking through like whale bones. At Praia de Chão, if you're here June, October you might see loggerhead turtles hauling their midnight cargo up the sand.
Tarrafal Concentration Camp Memorial
$10, 15 (transport + museum fee)On Santiago's northwest coast, a palm-lined bay hides a bleak slice of Portuguese history. Barbed wire still tops the cracked concrete barracks where political prisoners baked in tin-roof cells. Today you hear only waves and maybe a lone guitarist on the esplanade.
Half-Day Options
Shorter excursions when time is limited.
Pedra de Lume Salt Crater Float, Sal
$25 (taxi share + entry)A sunken volcano crater flooded with hyper-salty water lets you bob like a cork while gazing up at striated rust cliffs. The silence is total except for the odd salt flake plinking onto your sunglasses.
Mindelo Market & Porto Grande Boardwalk
$5, 10 (snacks + espresso stops)São Vicente's capital wakes with the scent of roasting coffee and just-caught tuna. You'll wander stalls piled with finger-shaped morna peppers, then watch ferries glide past painted colonial warehouses.
Praia's Sucupira Market & Plateau Architecture
$3, 6 (snacks + mini-grogue)A maze of tarpaulin alleys reeking of dried jackfish and coriander. Above it, pastel administrative buildings from the 1850s sit shuttered against the Harmattan, their azulejos glinting in midday glare.
Day Trip Tips
Make the most of your excursions.
- ✓ Inter-island flights sell out on Fridays. Book TACV or BestFly at least a week ahead, Fogo and Santo Antão routes.
- ✓ Aluguers leave when full, not on schedule. Arrive at terminals before 07:00 for same-day returns.
- ✓ Pack layers, Cape Verde weather swings from humid coast to chilly 1,500 m ridges within an hour's drive.
- ✓ Bring cash: ATMs exist only in main towns (Praia, Mindelo, Sal Rei, Espargos) and often empty on weekends.
- ✓ Turtle watching is strictly red-light only. Guides will lend filters, using phone flash can disorient nesting females.
- ✓ Sunday is church-and-family day. Most shops close, so stock water and snacks the evening before.
- ✓ Tap water is desalinated and safe in hotels. But for day hikes carry purification tablets, rural wells can be salty.
- ✓ Haggling is mild. Agree on taxi or tour prices beforehand. But tips of 5, 10 % are quietly expected.
