Day Trips from Cape Verde

Fifteen minutes south of downtown Praia, the cobblestones of Cidade Velha echo with 500-year-old footsteps. You'll smell woodsmoke drifting from backyard grills, hear the Atlantic slap against the black-rock shore, and see the corroding pastel fort that once fed slaves into the New World.

A 35-minute flight drops you onto an island that is one huge volcano. From São Filipe, 4×4 trucks grind up black lava to 1,700 m, then you hike the final hour to the 2,829 m crater rim. Sunlight glints off glassy obsidian and the air smells faintly of sulfur and vineyard soil.

From Santa Maria's hotel strip you head north past rust-coloured dunes to a lava shoreline where waves cannonade into a natural sea cave. Mid-day sun turns the pool an impossible cobalt locals call the "Blue Eye."

From Porto Novo a sinuous road corkscrews from sea level to 1,400 m in 16 km, revealing terraces of sugar-cane that smell almost maple-sweet when they burn the leaves. Clouds snag on knife-edge ridges and you'll hear cowbells clanking far below.

East of Sal Rei, the terrain turns pure Saharan: ocher dunes humming in the wind, with shipwreck ribs poking through like whale bones. At Praia de Chão, if you're here June, October you might see loggerhead turtles hauling their midnight cargo up the sand.

On Santiago's northwest coast, a palm-lined bay hides a bleak slice of Portuguese history. Barbed wire still tops the cracked concrete barracks where political prisoners baked in tin-roof cells. Today you hear only waves and maybe a lone guitarist on the esplanade.
